The issues around the national shortage of HGV drivers have been well documented in the news recently. The Delivery Group has taken a proactive stance on the matter with our Warehouse to Wheels initiative.
Our services rely heavily on HGV driver support, and we have taken a number of steps to ensure that our driver pool continues to grow in number and in capability.
As a business, we wanted to recognise the key role played by HGV drivers. To this end, we have incentivised driver recruitment both internally and externally with a pay-rate review and signing bonus.
Strong relationships forged over time with agency providers and sub-contractors give us access to experienced professionals. Additionally, we have extended our own driver training programme to accommodate over 20 trainees and rising, supported by our own highly skilled driver team. Five trainees have already passed through the programme, with more to follow.
The training programme is enabling us to upskill our Class 2 drivers to Class 1, and to also offer this progression route to external candidates. We are also encouraging existing warehouse employees to join the Class 2 training programme – hence ‘Warehouse to Wheels’ – as well as recruiting externally.
Businesses have faced an unprecedented number of challenges over the last couple of years. At The Delivery Group, we will always look to take the initiative and find solutions that keep customer service levels at the very highest level. Warehouse to Wheels is one such initiative.
